How to Create a Tech Portfolio for Your Next Job Interview

You’ve just landed a coveted interview for a tech position—now what? As a tech-savvy job seeker, you can increase your chances of getting hired with a strong, compelling tech portfolio.

A tech portfolio should showcase the finest recent examples of your work. Armed with this real, tangible evidence of your strengths, you’ll walk into the interview better prepared to answer questions and impress recruiters. Here’s how to create an effective technical portfolio.

Strategize Your Portfolio

Your tech portfolio should ideally answer the following questions:

  • What knowledge and skills do you want to show potential employers?
  • Who are you showing it to?
  • How will you highlight your strengths in the portfolio?
  • How can you use your portfolio to shine the spotlight on other job-related skills?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help you decide on the best way to structure the portfolio.

Pick a Design

Depending on your tech background, you might want to use your own website. To help spark inspiration, browse information technology portfolio examples online. WordPress, HTML templates, Wix, and Squarespace are good starting points for technical portfolio examples. Whether you build a site from scratch or use a template, aim for a simple, easy-to-read format with a readable font.

It’s also best to separate your technical portfolio into categories, such as:

  • About Me
  • Projects
  • Testimonials
  • Other Information/Call to Action

Write Your Bio

Include a brief bio at the beginning of your portfolio that details your background, current work, and career goals. Write about any projects you’re currently working on, and what technologies you are learning or hope to learn in the future. You might also want to include a story about how you started working in tech, or what inspired you to seek this role.

Select Samples

Your portfolio should include your best work, as long as it’s relevant to the job you’re seeking. Include links to the projects or code, or screenshots of the programs you worked on. Be sure to list the tech skills you used to complete the project (especially if these skills are required for this particular job).

Also, describe the project briefly with an explanation of the problem your project solves and the specific features you contributed. If you’re just starting out, create a project for the job you’re interviewing for, or include a project from school.

Share Testimonials

Show your job interviewer that you’re a highly skilled and valued team member by adding testimonials to your portfolio. If you haven’t already collected testimonials from past colleagues or bosses, reach out to see if they’d be willing to write one. You could also ask an instructor or former classmate who worked with you on a tech project in school. The testimonials you choose should be brief, descriptive, and mention your unique traits or experience.

Include a Section with Additional Information/Links

Use the last section of your tech portfolio to share your contact information and any other job-relevant experience you might have. Provide the link to any blogs or technical writing you have done, as well as your social media accounts.

Use the Portfolio During the Interview

Use your tech portfolio as a guide during the interview as you answer questions about your skillset and accomplishments. It’s convenient to be able to refer to your portfolio for specific examples of your work. Make multiple copies of the portfolio to leave with your interviewer or provide a link if the portfolio is best viewed online.

A tech portfolio is a great way to impress a recruiter and show off your talents. Even if you get the job, be sure to constantly update the portfolio to reflect your most recent work and interests. For more advice on landing a job in the tech field, check out our tech career resources.
